How to Hang an Interior Door: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hanging an interior door may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a bit of patience, it’s a job that can be tackled successfully by DIY enthusiasts. Follow these steps to ensure a professional-looking finish.

Tools and Materials Needed:

Step 1: Measure and Prepare the Doorway

Before purchasing a new door, measure the height and width of the doorframe to ensure a proper fit. Standard interior doors are usually 1981mm x 762mm, but always check your specific opening.

Step 2: Trim the Door if Necessary

If the door is slightly larger than the opening, trim it using a plane or circular saw. Make sure to trim equally from both sides and check frequently for a snug fit.

Step 3: Mark and Cut Hinge Recesses

Place the door in the frame and mark where the hinges should go. Typically, hinges are positioned 150mm from the top and bottom, with a third hinge in the middle. Use a chisel to create recesses for the hinges.

Step 4: Attach the Hinges

Screw the hinges onto the door first, ensuring they are flush with the edge. Then, position the door in the frame and mark hinge placements on the frame before securing the hinges in place.

Step 5: Hang the Door

With the help of a second person, position the door within the frame and screw the hinges into place on the frame. Use a spirit level to check that the door hangs straight.

Step 6: Check the Swing and Adjust if Necessary

Open and close the door to ensure smooth movement. If it catches on the frame, lightly sand or plane the affected area.

Step 7: Install the Door Handle and lock

Step 8: Fill Any Gaps and Paint (Optional)

If there are small gaps around the frame, use wood filler and sand it smooth. If desired, paint or stain the door for a finished look.
