A dowel is a rod-shaped moulding which joins two pieces of material and can be made using metal, plastic or most usually wood. Typically, a dowel would be used in the manufacturing stages of wood-based furniture designs to create the connection between two pieces of wood in place of screws or nails, for example when connecting legs of a chair to the chair itself. Sometimes however, they are used simply to offer added strength in the likes of flat-pack furniture. Alternatively, dowels are widely used for arts & crafts where they can have a wide variety of applications from model making, cake tiring, toy making etc
