TJ’s Tips - Measuring and Installing Wall Panelling

Measuring and Installing Wall Panelling

----

Tools you'll need:

1. Measure your walls

Begin by measuring the height and width of the wall where you’ll install the panelling. Make a note of any switches or outlets that you need to work around. To ensure symmetry, hold the panels up against the wall and work outwards from the centre. Use a pencil to mark where each panel will go, and remember to use a spirit level to keep your lines straight and accurate.

2. Cut and prime your panels

Using a hand saw, cut the timber panels to the sizes you've measured. Once cut, prime the panels with a wood primer, ensuring they’re prepped for painting later. This will help the paint adhere better and ensure a professional finish.

3. Prepare the walls

Before installing your panels, sand the walls to create a smooth and even surface. This will help the panels adhere properly. If you’d like a seamless look, you can also paint the wall behind the panels in your chosen colour before installation.

4. Install the panels

Place each panel against the wall to check the fit before applying any adhesive. Once you’re happy with the positioning, apply grab adhesive glue to the back of each panel. Press the panel firmly into position and hold for the recommended time. Install any vertical panels first, followed by horizontal panels.

5. Fill any gaps

Use filler or decorator’s caulk to fill in any gaps between the panels, as well as any joints. This will give a smooth, professional finish. Once the caulk has dried, lightly sand the area to ensure it’s smooth, then touch up with paint as needed.
