TJ’s Tips - How To Fit Skirting Boards

Tools and materials you'll need:

  • Skirting boards
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Miter saw or coping saw
  • Adhesive (e.g., construction adhesive or panel adhesive)
  • Hammer
  • Nails or screws
  • Spirit level
  • Sandpaper
  • Filler (optional)
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step 1: Preparation

Measure the length of each wall where you want to install skirting boards. Add a little extra to account for any cutting errors.

Purchase the required skirting boards, making sure they match the style and height you desire.

Prepare the tools and materials you'll need for the installation.

Step 2: Cutting the skirting boards

Lay the skirting board flat on a workbench or any suitable surface.

Measure and mark the required length on the skirting board using a measuring tape and pencil.

Use a miter saw or coping saw to make precise cuts at 45-degree angles for internal corners (where two skirting boards meet at an inside corner) or straight cuts for external corners (where skirting boards meet at an outside corner). Make sure the angles are correctly aligned.

Step 3: Dry fitting

Take the cut skirting board pieces to their respective positions on the wall.

Ensure that the corners align properly and the lengths are accurate.

Make any necessary adjustments by trimming the skirting boards with a saw until they fit perfectly.

Step 4: Fixing the skirting boards

Apply construction adhesive or panel adhesive to the back of each skirting board piece.

Carefully position the skirting board onto the wall, aligning it with the bottom edge and making sure the corners match up.

Use a spirit level to ensure the skirting board is straight and level.

Nail or screw the skirting board into place, placing the fasteners along the top edge and periodically along the length. Make sure the fasteners penetrate the wall studs or battens for a secure hold.

Repeat the process for each skirting board section until all are installed.

Step 5: Finishing touches

Check for any gaps between the skirting boards and the wall. If necessary, use caulk to fill in the gaps.

Allow the caulk to dry, and then sand it down until it is smooth and flush with the skirting boards.

If desired, paint or stain the skirting boards to match your room's decor.

Clean up any debris or excess adhesive.

Congratulations!

You have successfully fitted skirting boards. Your walls now have an attractive and finished look.
